Switching Jobs

About a month ago I turned in my letter of resignation in and it feels as if the days have been dragging on since then. Now I am in the last remaining days of this job before I move on to the next chapter of my career and life. I feel like the Bob Seger song “Turn the Page”. I have be working at this job for 2 years and a month, it has been a good place to work and I am very appreciative of everything that they have did for me. I feel that my time has been worthwhile for them also. Now I am moving on and I am excited about the new company and my future.

While it wasn’t a hard decision to leave this place but I think that I made it a lot harder on myself than it should have been. I did what I think a lot of people do when considering a new job. I ran through all of the Pros and Cons, talked with family and friends and researched the internet. I wanted to make sure that I left on good terms so I gave a months’ notice, looking back on that I now would have only given 2 weeks’ notice. But like they say hindsight is 20/20.

I decided to give such a long notice because I wanted to give them time to find someone that would be able to replace me and train them a little before I left. Now I am down to having 4 days left and they still haven’t interviewed anyone. That kind of makes me upset but if you think about it, they are only hurting themselves. I was willing to train someone but I guess they didn’t want that to happen. Which is ok because it has made my time since giving the notice feel like every other day, I come in, I work, I go home.

I will miss everyone that I currently work with, some more than others but that is normal.

Things that I have learned about switching jobs:

1.       Be honest with yourself
2.       Be discreet when looking. (don’t look for a job on company time)
3.       Don’t inform your boss that you have an offer until you are for sure you are going to take it.)
4.       If your current employer counters you need to look at things carefully. (if they match the other company think about how at the new company that their offer is a starting point, how long did it take you to get that money with the current employer.)
5.       Who has the better perks (what is going to make it easier for you to retire someday)
6.       Working environment (while you may be comfortable where you are, do you think the new place will be the same after time)
7.       Future training available to you (with each company)
8.       Do you like what you are currently doing
9.       Do you feel that you are being challenged or do you want to be challenged
10.   Don’t be afraid to negotiate

I am going to post everyday until I start the new job, then I will try and post while there to but the first little bit could be a little hectic we will see

Well I am unsure of the last time I posted something on here about my job search or being laid off or even a story from my life. So I figure I can do that while sitting here at the mall with all the screaming kids.
First off I am not hanging out with the screaming kids they are just down the hall a little bit, I just came out of the Radio Shack and found a chair to sit in to type this here little BLOG. Oh well I am starting to ramble on.
On to the work search and being laid off. Well I decided to quit looking for a job and to quit being laid off. How would I do such a thing you may ask yourself. Well I have to admit that I have great friends and that I found a job because of one of them. I have been working now for 3 weeks and I am happy. I like where I work, I like the people I work with, and it seems like a great company to be with. I am still drafting but now I am just drawing something different than I was before. With the new company I can go out to the shop and watch stuff be built, and I am even going to get to go to the field and watch something be erected. (now stop giggling)
Things are really starting to look up for me and my family. Which is great, I must say. I am now able to start rebuilding my savings and I can afford to buy things I need and want.
I have to say after being laid off for 3 months that I am one off the lucky ones, there are people out there that have been laid off longer than that and hope all of them can find work soon. I hope it never happens to me.

Well that is your update. Until next time stay tuned for more

Well this unemployed male has some news great news. After being laid off the day after thanksgiving I am now going back to work. I found a job isn’t that GREAT!!!!

So this job is not with the company I was with but is a company that does similar stuff but it is different. I am still happy.

I got the job offer the other day and then had to do some negotiating but we agreed on some stuff. Some stuff I don’t believe they could really change so I didn’t even try to.

So a little about the new job. I am still going to be drafting and using one of the programs I have used before. The drive is longer could be 3 times as long as my old commute. The old one was roughly 8 minutes. So the commute really not that bad. The hours are longer but there is a guarantee of overtime every week. That is nice.

Taxes are going to suck since the company is in another state but I pay someone to do taxes anyway so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

This will also help me get out of the house, since being laid off I haven’t really left the house don’t get me wrong I left the house but not often. I would take my wife to work and pick her up, go to the grocery and that is about it. I am so ready to go back to work.

Well I guess the next post won’t be from an unemployed male…

So if you have been reading my blog by now you know that I am laid off, I have had a total of 3 interviews which I know that I am extremely lucky.

Yesterday was my phone interview for an IT Tech position, I had never had one of those before and it was a little wierd. I got the phone call at 11:00 and went into our bedroom so I could concentrate. I talked to them and they sounded nice.

Here are the questions I was asked:

  1. Tell us a little about yourself
  2. Why did you leave your old job/why are you wanting to leave?
  3. What are your qualifications?
  4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  5. What kind of company would you like to work for?
  6. What do you know about our company?
  7. What do you look for in a manager/boss?
  8. What is you greatest strength and weakness?
  9. What is your pet peeves?
  10. How well do you handle pressure and stress?

The 9th question that was a weird one, I have never been asked that before and it was hard to answer. I answered it as best I could though. I said ” I guess my pet peeves would be hard headed people and people who just don’t care” Now I am not sure if that is a good answer but that is wh

at they got.

Now I have to wait to see if I made it through round one of their interview.

So that is where I am right now, I would love to hear back from one of the companies that I have interviewed with. Whether it be to tell me that they have found someone else or that they are still deciding. That way I don’t keep my hopes up.

Well if you want to know more about me or my job searches read the previous blogs.

Stay tuned for more from this unemployed male of the midwest.

I don’t even know if anyone is reading this or if I am just sending this out there.

So it is time for an update. I have lost count on how many days it has been.

I am still unemployed and Christmas is 3 days away. By all looks it is not going to be a very good Christmas. We were fortunate enough to have most of the shopping done before I got laid off. So that is a good thing but it is not like most other Christmas’s.

This is supposed to be the happiest time of the year but it is not going to be that way this year.

I am confident that I will have a job in the next 2 months. I am not going to get an interview with in the next 2 weeks because of the holidays, so I have to be patient and I will be.

I have been watching a lot of TV and keeping the house clean. I have also been playing Call Of Duty Black Ops. Good game play the ending is a let down but it was fun and the online play is good. I also caught up on Sons of Anarchy all I can say is you need to watch this show.

Until the next post from this unemployed man I hope you have a merry Christmas.

Laid Off-Day 2

Today is the second day I have been laid off.  So what did I do today…

I slept in and when I woke we got ready and then headed out to Dough nut Bank. We ordered a cake for my nephew his birthday party is this weekend. The cake we ordered is a Toy Story 3 cake. He loves Toy Story. I also had a bagel with very berry cream cheese on it.

After that we had breakfast we went to Wal-Mart and bought some Christmas gifts and some groceries. We then head home.

The wife had to work tonight so I gave her a ride to work and then came home. Where I decided to call a couple of friends to see how the industry is doing. It is not looking good out there that is all I can really say about that.

I also did the laundry, I washed 3 loads and folded a lot. I also watched some of the show “Surface” on Netflix. I love me some Netflix.  Also cleaned up the kitchen and swept the living room.

Agenda for tomorrow go by the office and get my final paycheck, go to the bank and stop by the college to get some paper work.

Tune in tomorrow for more from an unemployed man.

Today is the first time in 15 years that I don’t have a job. I have been laid off due to a lack of work. First off let me say this is going to suck! Second I hope I don’t get into my head. Third I am going to have to find some stuff to do to keep me busy.

So the beginning of my story starts now!

I was working for the same company for going on 13 years, they ran out of work so they had to lay people off. Nothing they could about, our customers are out of work so there is no one we can get work from. Really it is just a sign of the time. They say the recession is over, I would have to disagree especially in the Mid-West.

I have already filed for my unemployment which they say can take up to 21 days to start receiving it. What could happen in 21 days? hmm. I can miss my house payment, car insurance, all the credit card bills,  and all the other bills. I can not buy groceries. If something bad could happen it probably will.

While unemployed I have the luxury of looking for a new job that is not going to pay nearly what I made at my old job so there for making things really hard on me and my wife.

I will get to catch up on things around the house, wrap some Christmas gifts and get the house ready for Christmas dinner, maybe work on the book I have been writing, play some video games, and watch a lot of Netflix. I would say hang out with friends but they all still have jobs. I figure that everyday that I don’t work I will write on my blog and keep the world informed I can write about what I do during the day, what our pets do while I am home.

Is this a bad thing to get laid off or a blessing in disguise. That will only be shown with time. I hold no hard feelings towards the company I worked for, I know that if they had the work I would still be there. The problem is that if you don’t build I don’t work.

So stay tuned for more on my “EXCITING” time of being laid off.
